Today’s post is about Manipulatives! I just have to say… we LOVE them! There are so many things that can be learned using the tiny little things! Let me begin by defining the word manipulatives. Dictionary.com defines it as “Usually, manipulatives. any of various objects or materials that students can touch and move around in order to help them learn mathematical and other concepts” But I would like to point out that even though the basic math concepts is often discovered, the “other concepts” such as fine motor skills, social skills (while co-playing), imagination boosters, story telling, etc are amazing learning opportunities!
There are many times when we are unable to go outside because of the weather and we experience what I like to call “winter-itis!” This is a great example of when the manipulatives comes out! After the 500th dance party and exercise sessions, we focus our pent up need for a change to the table activities. We will get the play dough out and add the pigs for a stuck in the mud experience. Or we will pull out the “hay” for the horse mommas to lay beside her babies. And if we really go all out, we can grab all the animals and some washable paint to make a game of match the animal to the feet prints. Animals are not the only thing that can be a manipulative. Really anything can be used as a manipulative. We have used puff balls, cotton balls, popsicle sticks, rocks, Legos, and even corn. Mother Goose Time has provided us with items that are quality, durable and adorable items that can be used over and over again! (These are the FREE ones up for grabs!) Last year we received a cute set of veggies that are a favorite. I can’t count the times we have made soup in the kitchen or served them for a delicious meal in the dramatic play area. Here are a few pictures of the kids using them in action!
As you can see, everyone can use these and love them. Obviously, you have to watch the little ones under 3 closely for choking hazards. But with supervision, even they can enjoy developing their fine motor skills.
Each month we have received at least one set of these fabulous toys that goes with the theme. MGT does such a great job of including so many learning opportunities within the materials that makes it easy to incorporate into our play.
